An internal door handle is attached to a latch, which connects the door to the doorframe.
The latch has two components that lock the door in place; the cylinder, which is connected to the door, and the strike plate which sits on the doorframe and has a hole for the cylinder to sit in when the door is closed.
When the door handle is rotated, it moves the spindle, which connects the handle to the latch. The spindle then pulls the cylinder out of the hole in the doorframe, allowing you to open your door.

An internal door handle is relatively easy to fit. Most internal handles won’t need a locking system, which makes them far easier to install than on external doors.
Even those that do need a lock (like a bathroom door) often come with a simple, thumb turn lock that doesn’t require much extra effort to install.
Replacing internal handles is the easiest of all. Buy a handle with a latch that is the same size and you can simply unscrew the handle fixings and do a straight swap. If you are installing a handle on a new door, more work will be needed as you will have to make a hole through the door for the handle and latch to fit in.
With the right tools, anyone who is competent at DIY should be able to fit a door handle without too much hassle.
This will depend on whether you’re replacing a door handle or installing a completely new handle. The process for replacing an internal door handle is more simple as the holes are already cut into the door. Installing a handle on a new door will require some carpentry on your end.

A standard door handle should be situated between 34 and 48 inches (86cm to 121cm) from the ground. This places it just around hip height for most adults and allows those who are shorter or in wheelchairs to easily access the handle as well.
This height correlates with the sturdiest part of the door, making it the most secure placement of the doorknob.
Technically, yes, you can use any door handles for your external door. Although it’s important to keep safety and security in mind. External door handles typically have a tougher job than interior door handles – they are the front line of defence between your house and intruders.
Because of this, external door handles are usually fitted with one or more locking mechanisms to improve security.
While it is possible to use an internal door handle for your external door, it’s not recommended unless the proper security precautions are put in place.

Absolutely! It’s easy to paint your internal door handles and add a little more personalisation to your doors!
First, you’ll want to remove the door handles from the doors, and take them outside to paint. Place a blanket down that you don’t mind getting paint on or use a wooden block or tray.
Spray paint is recommended for painting your doorknobs as this will give them an even coat and texture. But if you’re feeling artsy, then traditional paints with a clear coat of spray paint on top should do the job.
Either way, you’ll want to wear a mask while using the spray paint so that you don’t inhale the fumes.

There are 3 main styles of door handles: lever-on-rose, pull handles and doorknobs.
The traditional big, brass mushroom handle that many people picture when they think of a door handle, is called a doorknob. The round ‘knob’ of the handle is available in a choice of different shapes, including the squat ‘mushroom’ shape, a flat-topped ‘tulip’ design or a fully curved spherical shape.
Pull handles feature an ‘arched’ shape on one side of the door, and a flat plate on the other side. They are only used on ‘push-pull’ doors and are used in very high traffic areas, often in commercial settings.
The final standard type of door handle is a ‘lever on rose’ or ‘lever on backplate’ design. These feature a thin horizontal lever set onto a bigger backplate. Historically a tall, narrow backplate has been popular, but most modern designs now feature a smaller ‘rose’ shape that is far less obtrusive.
